What makes a boot barefoot
Three things.
A really wide toe box. Your toes spread out like a fan, which is how they are meant to sit. In an ordinary boot your foot is squeezed into a point from day one, and in winter it is worse, because a sock goes in as well.
A thin sole that bends. Four millimetres in almost all of our models; five and a half in JALEO and BOHEME, which have a natural rubber sole. You can roll it up in your hand. That is what lets your foot feel the ground and grip it.
No heel. The heel and the toes sit at the same height, so your weight lands where it should and does not push you forward all day. A centimetre of heel seems like nothing until you have spent eight hours standing on it.
And there is a fourth that you cannot see: your foot sits loose inside. No last that narrows at the toes and no rigid heel counter. The boot holds just enough so that it does not come off, and nothing more.
Are they warm, with such a thin sole?
The warmth is in the lining, and that is where we put the material: organic cotton fleece in ENTROPÍA, MAMBO and CHAI, bamboo terry in BOHEME and CHEETAH, hemp twill in JALEO. These are fabrics that keep warm air next to your foot without packing down.
The 3 mm coconut fibre insole is the second layer. And you can take it out, in case you would rather use another one or wash it separately.
Barefoot boots for wet weather
None of our seventeen boots is waterproof. The closest is JAGUAR: it is made of natural rubber, which repels water naturally, and it copes well with low temperatures. Inside there is a bamboo fleece lining, and two riveted holes on the inner side let your foot breathe.
Repelling water is not the same as being waterproof: for a whole day of steady rain, wear something else. For everyday damp weather, it is the one we recommend.
Your size, with socks on
This is the question we get most, and it has an exact answer.
Measure your longest foot with a sheet of paper against a wall and add 10 to 15 millimetres. That is the allowance for closed shoes, the ones you wear with socks. The advice to «go up a size» is too little for some models and wobbles for others.
In the size guide you will find the table with the inside measurement of every size and a calculator that tells you yours. If you are between two sizes, take the bigger one: your toes will thank you.
And if you get it wrong, we pay for the size swap in mainland Spain, the Balearic Islands and Portugal. We send you the new pair and collect the other one.
Ankle boot, tall boot or Chelsea
All three are the same on the inside. What changes is how far up the ankle they go.
- Ankle boots. CHEETAH, DUNE, INK and KALAHARI: lower and lighter, for every day.
- Boots. JAGUAR, JALEO, CHAI and BOHEME, with a higher shaft and a warm lining.
- Chelsea boots. ECLIPSE, MAMBO and EBONY, with an elastic shaft.
Barefoot Chelsea boots for dressing up
Barefoot does not mean sporty. A wide toe box and a flat sole fit into a velvet Chelsea boot just as well as into a lace-up boot.
ECLIPSE is made of blue cotton velvet with Oleatex panels, the vegan leather made from olive tree biomass. MAMBO is in animal print fleece. Both have an elastic shaft, with the front lacing to adjust the fit, and this year we have shortened them by about 15 cm: more versatile and easier to combine.
Vegan boots, made in Spain
They are made in Spain, in workshops with a shoemaking tradition. In everyday terms that means you can try a last on, ask for a swap and come back the following week. That does not happen by video call twelve thousand kilometres away.
It also means the pair that reaches you has travelled a few kilometres, not half way round the world by ship.
The materials go in the same direction. Oleatex, a vegan leather from olive tree biomass, in CHAI and ECLIPSE. Cotton velvet, recycled microfibre, linen, hemp, bamboo. Nothing of animal origin, which is where this brand started. We explain it all on our biomaterials page.
If you are coming from ordinary boots
Go slowly. Your foot has spent years without having to hold itself up, and it needs a few weeks to remember.
Start with short spells, an hour or two, and alternate with what you wore before. Increase the time once your calves stop aching the next day. Boots can take a little longer than trainers, because in winter you walk for longer stretches.
If you would like to understand what is happening inside, we explain it on our foot-friendly page.
How to look after them
Dry brush first, always in the direction of the nap. For dirt that will not come off, a soft damp brush and a little neutral soap. Let them dry in the air, away from radiators and direct sun.
Take the insoles out before cleaning the inside. They are coconut fibre, so do not soak them.
Shipping, size swaps and returns
To Spain and Portugal they arrive in 24 to 48 hours; to the Balearic Islands, one day more. To the rest of Europe it takes 4 to 6 working days, and outside Europe 6 to 10, with customs charged separately.
You have 15 days from delivery to swap or return. If it is a size swap and you are in mainland Spain, the Balearic Islands or Portugal, we pay for it: we send you the new pair and collect the one that does not fit. From Spain and Portugal the return is also free if you take it to a Nacex office.
Pre-order models show their delivery date on the product page and in the basket, so there are no surprises.
Preguntas frecuentes
Do barefoot boots keep your feet warm in winter?
Yes, thanks to the lining: organic cotton fleece, bamboo terry or hemp twill depending on the model, plus the 3 mm coconut fibre insole. The thickness of the sole has nothing to do with how warm they are.
Are there waterproof barefoot boots?
None of ours is waterproof. JAGUAR, in natural rubber, repels water and is the best for damp weather, but it is not designed for steady rain.
What size should I take in barefoot boots?
Measure your longest foot and add 10 to 15 millimetres, which is the allowance for closed shoes worn with socks. The calculator in the size guide gives you the exact size for each model. If you are between two sizes, take the bigger one.
Are these boots only for women?
No. They are the same for everyone: one last, in EU sizes 35 to 45 depending on the model. Each card above shows the sizes still available for that model.
